It would be very simple to call this set a "Max Robertson" set because there are two booklets with it by that author. The truth is that these books were sold separately, so I can't do it. They are great books though, and good quality compared to similar ones from the same era.

This set is very close in design to the one in the Red Tin box also featured in this section of THE BOOK. The quirky little bird is the same, as are many of the other designs. Please, let me explain my use of "quirky". This sparrow is a very open and very crude design, but I love it. In fact, these are just the types of designs I find very charming and very collectable. I do get very bored looking at and describing the same thing over and over again.

The box is very heavy cardboard covered with a nice brocade fabric, and the inside is a shiny Chinese Red. There is a horn Mingg jar with 4 wind disks, bone betting sticks, a pair of dice and, of course, the two books. The tiles measure 1 1/8" x 7/8" x 3/8" and the designs are embossed (lightly) and painted. The box measures 10 3/4" x 5 1/2" x 2 1/2". The books measure 7 1/2" x 5" and have 54 pages.
